Checkmate Clash

Checkmate Clash is a straight game of chess in the browser, with a full board, standard piece movement and an opponent that answers every move you make. Nothing is reinvented: you develop pieces, contest the centre, trade when the trade favours you and hunt the enemy king. Because the rules are the real thing, a beginner can use it to drill openings while a stronger player treats it as a quick tactical workout.

This title is best suited to players who want a proper game of chess without installing anything.

1. Start a match and take the side the game assigns you
2. Select a piece to see the squares it can legally reach
3. Move it onto a square to develop, capture or defend
4. Answer the opponent's reply and keep your king covered
5. Force checkmate, or hold a draw when the position will not win

Objectives

• Checkmate the opposing king while keeping your own out of a forced mate.

The run ends or fails when

• Being checkmated ends the game, and a stalemate or repetition draws it.

• Full standard chess movement, capture and check resolution on an eight-by-eight board.
• The opponent replies to every move, so each turn is answered rather than free.
• Material trades and king safety drive the result more than any single clever move.

• Develop knights and bishops before pushing the queen out early
• Castle once your minor pieces are out and the king still has a safe square
• Count the defenders on a square before you capture on it
