Game overview

MCATLANTS is a co-operative run where the exit does not exist until you build it. Two characters work through an underwater world clearing the monsters in their way and collecting the dark coins those fights leave behind, and only once enough coins are gathered does the portal open. Neither character can finish the job alone, so the design forces genuine co-ordination rather than two people playing side by side.

This title is best suited to two players who want a co-operative run with a shared collection goal.

How to play MCATLANTS

  1. Take one character each and set off into the world
  2. Clear the monsters blocking the route
  3. Collect the dark coins the fights leave behind
  4. Gather enough coins for the portal to form
  5. Reach the portal together to finish the stage

Controls

  • Keyboard: first player moves and jumps with one half of the keyboard
  • Keyboard: second player moves and jumps with the other half
  • Keyboard: attack a monster in range

Objectives and failure conditions

Objectives

  • Defeat the monsters, collect enough dark coins to create the portal, and reach it with both characters.

The run ends or fails when

  • Losing a character to the monsters or the hazards restarts the attempt.

Gameplay mechanics

  • The exit portal is built from collected coins, so progress is a resource goal rather than a location.
  • Both characters are needed, making the stages co-operative by construction.
  • Combat and collection alternate, since monsters guard the coins.

Tips for MCATLANTS

  • Fight monsters together rather than splitting up to save time
  • Sweep an area fully for coins before pushing forward
  • Agree who leads into a fight so neither player takes it alone

What worked well and what did not

Pros

  • The portal requirement makes co-operation structural, not optional
  • Combat and collecting break up the platforming
  • Clear shared goal for two players

Cons

  • Little to do alone, since it is built around two
  • Losing a character costs the whole attempt
